Pruning a tree to remove specific dead/dying/diseased branches or stems will benefit the whole tree. Trimming will also keep the tree healthy and green all the way to the bottom and helps keep the tree upright in strong winds and heavy snows.  Proper trimming can also maintain the trees natural form and keep it to the height you desire.
